Boozhoo (hello) everyone!
When I created The STEAM Connection at eighteen years old, I had no idea what we were capable of. I had no idea that we’d be serving hundreds of thousands of youths with technical education or inventing new robots we’d never seen before. This has all been possible because you: our educators, our youth, and those who want to see every child access STEAM.
And that’s why we are so excited to share with you what we’ve been up to for the past couple of weeks!
We’ve been hard at work on a new wearable Indigenous language learning robot for youth with a small team of Indigenous creators and language speakers. We are proud to announce that we are releasing the robot on Friday… yes this Friday!
We also got huge news! I became an MIT Solve Indigenous Communities Fellow and we received $135,000 dollars in funding to support Every Kid Gets a Robot!!! The funding is from MIT Solve and their partners American Student Assistance through the ASA Prize for Equitable Education and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through their prize. We are so incredibly thankful, miigwech (thank you) for all of the support, MIT Solve and partners!
Right now, we are in Phoenix, Arizona to launch our new robot and participate in the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference. If you are visiting AISES NC, keep reading to learn how you can meet our robot and participate with us!
On top of all of this, we’ve been working on two new inventions for months now that we are eager to release soon. One is biodegradable robotics components and the other is a robot that cleans up recyclables off of school floors. The best part of it all? One of the robots is designed by a 13-year-old named Vinaya Gunasekar.
We’ve received many messages asking when our next classes will be! We will be launching several of our new programs including a Girls of Color Engineering League within the next couple of months… so stay tuned! We are a very small team and apologize if we haven’t been able to reply to every single message or inquiry. We care about you and are expanding our team size to be able to handle all of the amazing messages that we get. Learn how to volunteer below.
A huge thank you for following us on our journey and for believing in the power of robots. Let’s continue to see where we can go!
